Bread is perhaps the simplest unit of survival, yet its price contains the complexity of entire civilizations. The installation invites visitors to eat pieces of the sculpture together. On a table beneath the work is a list of bread prices from 1700 to 2026, reflecting on the effect of political, economic, and environmental crises on its price.

The Victorian chandelier is a symbol of wealth, ornament, and class. Bread represents survival and labor. Together, they create a contrast between luxury and necessity, complexity and the essential.

Throughout history, bread has often been a social barometer. Made from basic agricultural inputs, grain, water, energy, and labor, its price reflects multiple systemic pressures, including war, climate crises, energy shortages, inflation, and political instability.

For example In 1923, money stopped being a stable measure of value. Bread became more “real” than currency.
