Mezzanine on Fire

Wood, Stage lights, sound.

2025

Mezzanine on Fire is an installation work constructed from discarded wood sourced from a construction site, using waste material as a metaphor for the creation of new spaces. The sculpture was presented as a communal gathering place during Karneval der Kulturen, Berlin, 2025.

The word mezzanine, from the Latin medius (“middle”), refers to an architectural invention, a space that is neither the ground floor nor the first floor, but something in between. Traditionally, mezzanines were used to extend the function of a room, often serving as storage areas or living quarters for servants.

The fire evokes a gathering place, where people come together to share stories, food, and warmth.

Mezzanine on Fire operates as a metaphorical construction. Built from materials deemed obsolete, it transforms the physical remnants of a building site into a space that extends beyond architecture, opening into the metaphysical.
